UVA Home Run King Jake Gelof Picked By Dodgers In Same Slot As Big Bro

Record-setting righty infielder Jake Gelof may be taking his talents from the University of Virginia to the West Coast as he follows in his older brother's footsteps.

With the 60th overall pick in the MLB Draft held over All-Star weekend, the Los Angeles Dodgers chose the hard-hitting Cavaliers star in the second round just months after he became the school's all-time home run leader.

The 21-year-old was drafted two years after brother Zack went to the Oakland Athletics with the same 60th pick in the second round of the 2021 draft out of the University of Virginia.

During his standout career at UVA, the younger Gelof broke the school single-season record for RBIs with 81 in 2022 before topping himself this year with 90, making him the only player in program history with more than 70 (no less 80) in two different seasons.

His 48 career home runs are also a program record, and he was the first to mash more than 20 in two separate seasons - six of which came during NCAA Tournament games, most ever for the Cavaliers.

Gelof slashed .329/.429/.683 in his three seasons at Virginia while adding seven triples, 46 doubles, and 104 walks to go with the long balls.

It's safe to say that Gelof heading to Los Angeles could have been written in the stars, as his father shared a photo of the young infielder sporting Dodger blue as a kid following his pick.

It is unclear which level of pro ball the most prolific power hitting in UVA program history is heading if he signs with the Dodgers, though his slot value as the 60th overall pick sits at $1,336,900.

In the same position, the older Gelof signed in 2021 for $1,157,400.

None of the Dodgers' 2023 picks have signed, and their total bonus pool is $7,274,600 for all 10 selections.
